From the Immokalee Bulletin:

“Amazed by the demand for quality education and lack of resources at Lake Trafford Elementary School, Joanne McCall with the Florida Education Association, saw a need to help fill the void in literacy efforts with Immokalee area school children.

McCall reached out to Tom Moran with the American Federation of Teachers as well as the Collier County Education Association and collectively they worked with First Book to bring in nearly 40,000 brand new books to local children and educators.

Kicking off the event, McCall welcomed everyone to the book event which was held at the Immokalee Community Park on North 1st Street. Following the opening welcome, everyone helped themselves to a number of free books and played games that were geared toward younger children.

McCall said that each school in Immokalee will receive 120 books, some of which are published in other languages that are culturally diverse based on the local population.

First Book, a non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C., provides free books to kids and educators across the country. To help First Book continue their effort of increasing literacy among our nation’s youth, please visit their website at www.firstbook.org.”
